Borrow A Horse
This program is similar to an off-farm free lease. The horses are available to take home at the end of camp (August 24, 2019) and are returned to us either the 1st or 2nd week of June. The difference is that you, as the “buyer”, would sign a “conditional sales contract” therefore legally, you would own the horse and be responsible for all that is involved with horse
ownership. There is a $400 deposit which you pay when you select your horse and which is
returned to you in June when you return the horse and fulfill the contract. (You also have 1st
option of taking the same horse again the following year. You can leave the deposit with us if
you are planning to take the horse again.) Tack can be included in the contract for an additional deposit, and that part of the deposit is not refundable.
Some of the advantages of “borrowing” versus buying is that if your (or your child’s) skill level improves you can “trade up” to a different horse next year. Or, if her interest wanes you can be finished with horse ownership completely. Sometimes people also go away on vacation in the summer, or want to give their pasture a chance to rejuvenate. The biggest advantage may be that you don’t have to come up with money for a purchase price!
You will be responsible for all board, shoeing, vet bills, and trucking on the horse.
There is a price on the contract where you can buy the horse instead of returning it in the
spring but it is usually an expensive price so that we don’t lose all our horses right before
camp. If you decide, before October 1 of the current year, that you would like to buy the horse, there may be a lower price.
The horses all have negative Coggins certificates and are current on their vaccines.
We require that the horse be given a Coggins test and vaccines in the spring, including Eastern, Western, Tetanus, Flu, Rhino, West Nile, Rabies, and Strep (Strangles) (preferably at least a month prior to returning him/her). Before you return the horse we will need a copy of the negative Coggins certificate and a rabies certificate.
You should contact your insurance company to let them know you will be owning a horse. They may require additional insurance coverage.
