Frequently Asked Questions

Registration and Before Camp

What happens after I register?

If there is space in your desired session your camper will be automatically enrolled and the deposit will be processed. If there is a wait-list, other consideration associated with that session, or you select “check” as your payment method your registration will have an “Applied” status. Once the check is received and/or other issues are resolved your camper will be enrolled. Please take note that your spot in the session is not saved until your registration is considered ENROLLED, not applied.

Once you’re enrolled you will be able to access forms for the season, upload health documents, and fund your canteen account!

Payment in full is due by March 15th and all forms must be completed by their due date in order for your child to attend camp.

What should I pack my stuff in?

You can pack in almost anything! A trunk, soft sided luggage, duffel bags, storage bins… whatever you have! Please try to keep it under 13″ tall so the majority of items can fit under the bunks to preserve floor space in the cabin.

Can we come for a tour of camp?

Yes! Tours are scheduled at least once a month, sometimes more depending on demand. We also host an Open House in May! Please reach out to camp@sjridingcamp.com for more information and to sign up!

Can my camper bring their cellphone?

No. We are a tech-free camp, so we don’t allow cell phones. We understand that this can be uncomfortable, especially for first-time campers, but we ask that you allow them to immerse themselves in the camp environment! We avoid camper phone calls home in general, as it can trigger homesickness and disrupts the child’s day to be taken out of the program.

How can I avoid processing fees on my payments?

You can avoid processing fees by paying via check! You can mail it to SJ Riding Camp, 130 Sandy Beach Rd, Ellington CT 06029. If you choose to mail a check, please notify us when it has been sent so that we can keep an eye out for it.

How are Cabins decided?

Cabins are decided by age, then cabinmate requests. If your camper is coming with a friend please make sure they request each other in their paperwork. We do our best to honor all requests but may need to split large groups of friends into multiple cabins depending on enrollment.

Refund Policy

-The balance (less deposit) will be refunded only if canceled by April 1st, 2025.
-Session changes can be made based on availability, please contact us for more details.
-NO refunds will be provided for leaving camp early. (i.e illiness, injury, homesickness, violating camp safety policies and rules, weather, and any other reason deemed by camp director.)
For this reason we recommend getting trip cancellation insurance. Trip cancellation insurance is available at the time of registration through Program Protector.

What is Camp Minder/CampInTouch/Campanion?

These are the many faces of our camp software!
-Camp Minder is the software itself which you may hear the staff reference in conversations about registration, profiles, etc.
-Camp InTouch is the parent-facing side of the software! You login to Camp InTouch when you’re using a browser on your phone or a desktop.
-Campanion is the app! You can access paperwork, pictures, emails, microposts and MORE. If you haven’t downloaded the app yet we highly recommend that you try it!

During Camp

How can I keep in touch with my camper?

You can send letters to your camper through the mail or via the Campanion app emailing service. All Campanion emails are printed daily and delivered at lunch time with the physical mail!

You can use Campanion to see pictures of what’s going on at camp each day! Please upload a training photo of your camper to be notified when they are tagged in a picture.

How does the mail work?

Mail is delivered daily at lunch time. You can send care packages, letters, and emails (via Campanion app)! Please address mail as follows:
Camper First and Last Name
SJ Riding Camp
130 Sandy Beach Rd,
Ellington, CT 06029

Can I visit my camper?

If your camper is staying for longer than two weeks then we recommend that you pick them up for a visit in between sessions. We do not host visitation days at camp. You will need to sign them out with a Director and advise us of your plan for their return. Some families take their campers out for lunch, shopping, a movie, etc, then return them to camp to sleep over with us. Others stay overnight at their homes or at a hotel if they are not local. Please be aware that there is a charge for sleeping over during intersession!

What about laundry?

Laundry can be done as many times as a camper needs during their stay. She can drop off her laundry in the morning and will get it back within 24 hours. Each load costs $10.00 and will be charged to their Canteen account. Please label ALL of your clothing to avoid confusion.

What if my daughter takes medications?

Medications are administered by certified staff at breakfast, dinner, and bedtime unless there are other instructions. The camp nurse will help you make a plan if needed. All medications MUST be in their original, labeled containers. Absolutely no medications may be kept in the cabin area! Prescriptions medications will require a Medication Authorization form signed by your doctor (found in Campanion/CampInTouch).

Please do not send non-essential over-the-counter medications (i.e. vitamins, supplements, Advil, etc.). We stock all common OTC meds at the health center!

Can I tip my cabin counselor?

Yes! Please feel free to tip the camp staff. They are extremely hard working and deserve any recognition possible. HOWEVER, we pool all tips so we can evenly distribute them to cabin staff and behind the scenes crew like kitchen and maintenance staff! The easiest way to do this is for you to leave your tip at the checkout table with the directors.

Can I bring my dog to pickup/dropoff day?

As much as we love furry friends, please do not bring your pet to camp. We do not know your dog and camp can be a dangerous place for them. We encourage you to leave your pets safe at home or with a sitter.
